The Grand Opera House is known as the premiere historic theatre in Central Georgia, and one of our region’s most cherished cultural gems. As performing arts center of Mercer University, we are proud to offer Broadway touring productions, music concerts and educational programs through our GrandKids series. The Grand has long been the site of excellent performances by community-based arts and cultural organizations like The Nutcracker of Middle Georgia, Macon Civic Club, Georgia Allman Brothers Band Association festival, Otis Redding Foundation and dozens of dance and theatre groups. More recently, we used the pandemic restrictions this past year to shine a spotlight on the brightest and most compelling stars right here in our backyard. Like Ed Grant’s journey from the son of a bartender during segregation to the moment Cher walked into Grant’s Lounge. Like seeing your child’s science teacher at Mount DeSales belt out a Broadway hit at the Cabaret. Like listening to a Monroe County native discuss being a healthcare executive in a global crisis.
When we couldn’t bring the stars of Broadway to Macon, we elevated the stars of Macon to a Broadway-level stage. And in doing so, a new audience feels welcome and that people like them belong here.
